Auto Loan Refinancing: When It Makes Sense and How to Compare Offers
Refinancing replaces your current auto loan with a new one, ideally with a lower APR or a payment that fits your budget better. It can help, but it isn't always a win.
When refinancing may make sense
- Your credit has improved since you took out the original loan.
- Market rates have dropped since you bought the car.
- You financed at a dealer without comparing offers.
- You need a lower monthly payment and understand the tradeoff.
When it may not
- You owe more than the car is worth (negative equity); many lenders limit this.
- Your loan is nearly paid off, so savings are small.
- Fees or a longer term would raise the total you pay.
- Your current loan has a prepayment penalty that cancels the savings.
What to compare
- New APR vs. current APR
- Remaining term vs. new term
- Fees (application, title transfer, lien fees)
- Total cost of the remaining current loan vs. total cost of the new loan
- Whether prequalification uses a soft check
What you'll need
- Vehicle details (VIN, mileage)
- Current loan payoff amount and lender information
- Proof of income, ID and insurance
